Israel strikes Gaza, Claims Hits on 2 Rocket Launchers

Last Monday, Israel launched an air strike and hit two hidden Gaza missile launchers. Israel Defense Forces stated that they were direct hits. A training camp west of Gaza City was also hit. No injuries were reported.

This ties into our standards through our history standard that says to describe how land and religion are reasons for continuing conflicts in the Middle East. The Palestinian Arabs and Israeli Jews have been fighting over Israel/Palestine for many years. They both have solid reasons to why the land is theirs.

History

SS7H2 The student will analyze continuity and change in Southwest Asia (Middle East) leading to the 21st century.

a. Explain how European partitioning in the Middle East after the breakup of the Ottoman Empire led to regional conflict.

b. Explain the historical reasons for the establishment of the modern State of Israel in 1948; include the Jewish religious connection to the land, the Holocaust, anti-Semitism, and Zionism in Europe.

c. Describe how land and religion are reasons for continuing conflicts in the Middle East.

d. Explain U.S. presence and interest in Southwest Asia; include the Persian Gulf conflict and invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.

Israel released 26 Palestinian prisoners early Wednesday. They released the prisoners because it was part of an agreement that has fueled new peace talks. The release has angered some Israelis who protested.

SS7H2 The student will analyze continuity and change in Southwest Asia (Middle East) leading to the 21st century.

b. Explain the historical reasons for the establishment of the modern State of Israel in 1948; include the Jewish religious connection to the land, the Holocaust, anti-Semitism, and Zionism in Europe.

This article connects to our standards because in Unit 1 we learned about Israel and Palestine fighting over the same land. Now it seems that they are making up and coming to an agreement.

Saudi Arabia the Saudi Arabi Interior Ministry warned all women that anyone caught driving or demonstrating. Some activist had gone against them. Some of the women that participated said that they had received threatening calls from men. Then the woman had doubts… on the video link attached she says she has had doubts on if she should be doing it. They have an option and that option is to take the law out.

SS7H2 The student will analyze continuity and change in Southwest Asia (Middle East) leading to the 21st century.

This article connects to this standard because it is showing the change from awhile ago and their beliefs to them even considering to change their law. They have taken a law that was sacred them and the people don't agree as stated in the paragraph above. They are going against that and trying to help the people.

There have been suicide bombings in Iraq targeted at the Shia. These attacks have been in al-Tarmiya and in Mosul. These attacks are said to be targeted by the Sunni and killed 22 people and injured 15. There have been more than 6,000 deaths this year and 350 deaths in this month.

This relates to our standards because it shows the fighting between the Shi'a and the Sunni religious groups. This relates to what happened when the two groups fought over who would be the leader of the muslims when Muhammad died. The two groups have been fighting over this decision for a long time.

SS7G8 The student will describe the diverse cultures of the people who live in Southwest Asia (Middle East).

d. Explain the reason for the division between Sunni and Shia Muslims.

Yet again there has been regional conflict in SWA. Israel has bombed an area in Gaza after Israel's defense systems intercepted a  missile over the city of  Ashkelon. This is proof that there is still aggression towards Israel from other middle eastern or SWA countries.

This article connects to our standards by showing another conflict over land and religion. This is another attack on Israel out of religious differences and hate.  This also demonstrates regional conflict because this is most likely out of anger between Israeli Jews and Palestinian Arabs over the land of Israel.

Concealed Rockets Hit the Gaza Strip

The Israeli military confirmed on Monday that two concealed rockets hit the Gaza Strip. Some Palestinian Security told CNN that  a training camp west of Gaza City was hit but that so far there were no injuries. Lt. Col. Peter Lerner said that the air strike was a response to terrorist aggression in Gaza.

I think that this article goes with the standards because it goes with what we learned about the conflicts in the Middle East, like with Palestine and Israel.

Saudi Arabia gives a strict warning to women protesters and drivers

http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/24/world/meast/saudi-arabia-women-drivers/index.html?hpt=wo_bn8

Women have been given very threatening calls, on October 26th, from men that have claimed to be from “the Interior Ministry” to stop driving or else be given awful consequences. Certain laws and bans in Saudi Arabia restrict women from driving in the public and anyone caught driving will certainly be punished. On that very Saturday, all women are required to let go of the wheel while protesting. Many are protesting against this ban and support the Women’s Driving Campaign. All women hope for a change and believe that their actions will give them more freedoms.

This relates to our social studies curriculum because in class, we have discussed multiple times about Southwest Asia’s personal freedoms and governments. This topic has been reviewed and we have learned that countries in Southwest Asia like Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Israel all have restrictions towards women, including driving.

SS7CG5 The student will explain the structures of the national governments of Southwest Asia (Middle East).

a. Compare the parliamentary democracy of the State of Israel, the monarchy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the theocracy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, distinguishing the form of leadership and the role of the citizen in terms of voting rights and personal freedoms.

Unhealthy Ramadan eating patterns hospitalizes many Muslims.

Not so fast: Ramadan sees rise in binge eating and A&E cases

Muslims fast during a celebrative time of year called Ramadan. Unusual eating patterns has caused many people to be hospitalized. During the day they can not eat but after dusk they are free to eat anything they want. Instead of a healthy meal they scarf down fast food and unhealthy, sugary drinks. Unlike Judaism or Christianity Islam gives the Muslims freedom to eat at dusk which has led to sickness instead of recovering well. Doctors and reporters have been worried about this very important subject.

This topic shows how diverse their country is. It also compares the unique things that separate each of the main three religions. It also only describes the cultural group instead of adding in unnecessary ethnic groups. These are the ties between the article and Ga. standards.

SS7G8 The student will describe the diverse cultures of the people who live in Southwest Asia (Middle East).

a. Explain the differences between an ethnic group and a religious group.

b. Explain the diversity of religions within the Arabs, Persians, and Kurds.

c. Compare and contrast the prominent religions in Southwest Asia (Middle East): Judaism, Islam, and Christianity.

d. Explain the reason for the division between Sunni and Shia Muslims.

e. Evaluate how the literacy rate affects the standard of living.

Several women who defied Saudi Arabia are afraid that they are being watched and followed by the country’s secret police. They described how they had been followed by groups of men in cars since Saturday. Many of the women hopped in their own cars and left the Saudi Arabian cities while video taping themselves and putting it on youtube.

After the Ottoman Empire completely split up the Europeans were in charge of splitting the land for the two opposing groups, Israelis and Palestinians. This led to major conflict and small wars leading up to the Israelis winning and creating their new state, Israel.

a. Explain how European partitioning in the Middle East after the breakup of the Ottoman Empire led to regional conflict.

Israel Releases Prisoners

Yesterday Israel released hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. Many people think this is a step toward peace between Israel and its Arab neighbors. Many Israelis protested against this decision.

In class we discussed how the establishment of Israel resulted in a lot of conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. Hopefully this release of prisoners may help resolve some of that conflict
